I Talked to a Tree Once. It Gave Me Something I Didn’t Know I Was Missing.

I’m convinced there are two versions of us.

The one who walks from one task to the next, mentally writing tomorrow’s to-do list while reheating yesterday’s coffee.

And the one who notices the way sunlight slips through leaves like it’s trying not to wake the afternoon.

Lately…

I’ve been the first one.

Which is partly why I’ve been a little quiet here.

I kept thinking I’d come back when I had something important to say.

Something polished.

Something useful.

Instead, life handed me something much smaller.

And somehow…

Much bigger.

First, I owe you an apology.

I’ve been a little quiet around here.

Not because I ran out of ideas. If anything, my Notes app has become a museum of oddly specific thoughts that only make sense at 1:14 a.m. (“What if pigeons think we’re all in one giant escape room?”)

Life just got loud.

You know how it does.

The kind of loud that isn’t dramatic enough to become a movie montage but somehow convinces you you’ve forgotten how to notice things.

I kept waiting for a “productive season.”

For inspiration.

For motivation.

For that magical Monday where suddenly I become the kind of person who wakes up at 5 a.m., drinks lemon water, answers emails with frightening efficiency, and never accidentally opens Instagram just to check one notification that somehow turns into watching someone restore a 1930s waffle maker.

It never came.

Instead…

I met a tree.

Peaceful forest with tall trees at sunset showcasing golden light nature mindfulness slow living and outdoor tranquility

A few evenings ago, I found myself standing beneath a tree.

Not because I had a reason to.

I wasn’t exercising. I wasn’t taking aesthetic pictures. I wasn’t “grounding” or “forest bathing” or participating in any wellness trend that requires a linen outfit.

I was just… there.

The air was warm enough to feel like a hug.

The wind kept stealing little strands of my hair and placing them directly into my lip gloss, which, if you’ve ever had long hair, is nature’s favourite practical joke.

The leaves above me kept moving in slow waves.

Almost like they were breathing.

Without really thinking, I looked up and quietly said,

“You’re beautiful.”

And then, because nobody was around to witness my dignity leaving my body…

I started talking.

Not about anything dramatic.

Just little things.

How strange adulthood is.

How quickly weeks disappear.

How I miss the version of me that could spend an entire afternoon lying on the grass without feeling guilty about it.

I laughed at myself halfway through.

Because imagine explaining this to someone.

“Sorry I’m late. I was updating a tree on recent events.”

It was one of those golden evenings where everything looked like it had been dipped in honey. The sun wasn’t shining so much as it was hugging everything. The breeze kept playing with my hair like we were in a shampoo commercial with a budget of nothing, and the whole world had that sleepy summer glow that makes you believe life is secretly in love with you.

I stopped under this enormous tree and, for reasons I still can’t explain, looked up and said,

“Okay… if you’re listening…”

I started telling it what I was manifesting.

Nothing wildly serious.

Just lovely little things.

That my blog finds the people who’ll feel at home here.

That I get to make a living writing about beautiful ordinary moments.

That one day someone will email me saying, “Your words made me go outside today.”

I even threw in a few ridiculous requests because if you’re already talking to a tree, you might as well commit.

“Also… unlimited iced coffee money would be fantastic.”

I stood there waiting for absolutely nothing.

The tree, unsurprisingly, remained incredibly professional.

No applause.

No magical beam of light.

Not even a leaf dramatically falling into my hand like a Disney movie.

Just… wind.

Soft leaves dancing overhead.

Birds having what sounded like a very passionate disagreement.

And sunlight flickering through the branches.

Somewhere between telling this tree my ridiculous little dreams and laughing at myself for doing it…

I kept talking.

About how strange growing up is.

About how sometimes I miss the version of me who believed magic lived in ordinary places.

About how I’ve been a little quiet lately—not because I stopped loving this little corner of the internet, but because life has a funny way of convincing you that you should only create once everything feels figured out.

The tree didn’t interrupt.

It didn’t offer advice.

It didn’t tell me to optimise my morning routine or post three times a week.

It just stood there.

Steady.

Patient.

Listening in the way only something that’s been alive longer than you can.

And for a few minutes…

I forgot I was trying so hard.

The sun warmed my face.

The wind kept stealing strands of my hair.

The leaves whispered above me, and for one tiny, perfect moment, I wasn’t thinking about algorithms or productivity or whether I was behind.

I was just a girl standing under a tree, telling it about her dreams.

And somehow…

That felt like the most human thing I’ve done in weeks.

Maybe that’s why I’m writing again.

Because life isn’t only made of big milestones.

It’s made of these tiny golden moments that almost disappear if you don’t stop long enough to notice them.

The moments where the world quietly reminds you it’s still beautiful.

Where the breeze feels like an old friend.

Where the sunlight kisses your cheeks.

Where you accidentally tell a tree your hopes for the future and walk away feeling lighter—as if the universe smiled, tucked your wishes safely into the leaves, and whispered,

“I’ve got them.”

If this little corner of the internet has been quieter than usual, maybe it’s because I’ve been collecting moments like this instead of words.

Now I think they’re the same thing.

They’re just waiting for someone to write them down.

Here’s the weird part.

Somewhere while talking….

I stopped talking at the tree.

I started talking with it.

Not because it suddenly answered.

(It didn’t. Trees are notoriously terrible conversationalists.)

But because it never interrupted.

Never tried to fix me.

Never reminded me I should monetize my hobbies.

Never asked what my five-year plan was.

It just existed beside me.

And somehow that was enough.

We’re constantly surrounded by things demanding our attention.

Notifications.

Algorithms.

Deadlines.

People telling us we’re one productivity hack away from becoming our best selves.

Meanwhile this tree had apparently mastered the revolutionary concept of…

Existing.

Imagine that.

No personal brand.

No morning routine content.

No LinkedIn post about “10 lessons I learned from photosynthesis.”

Just…

Leaves.

Wind.

Sunlight.

Presence.

I started noticing ridiculous little things.

How sunlight doesn’t just shine.

It dances.

How wind doesn’t just move.

It plays.

How shadows stretch across the grass like they’re trying to make friends.

How birds argue with each other with the confidence of people who’ve never been wrong in their lives.

I realized I’d spent months looking through the world instead of at it.

Like someone speed-running a beautiful video game without ever stopping to admire the scenery.

One afternoon I leaned against the tree after a particularly overwhelming day.

I didn’t have some grand life revelation.

I didn’t suddenly discover my purpose.

Nothing cinematic happened.

The sun just warmed my face.

The wind tangled my hair into what can only be described as “haunted Victorian child.”

And for five whole minutes…

I wasn’t trying to become someone else.

I wasn’t trying to catch up.

I wasn’t trying to optimize happiness.

I was simply…

Here.

It felt strangely illegal.

Like I’d discovered a life hack capitalism forgot to put behind a subscription.

Maybe that’s what life is supposed to feel like more often.

Not every day.

Not every moment.

But enough.

Enough afternoons where the sun sits on your skin just long enough for you to remember you have one.

Enough breezes that remind you your hair was designed to dance.

Enough quiet conversations with things that don’t expect anything from you.

Enough tiny moments that don’t look impressive on Instagram but somehow become the ones you remember years later.

The ones that quietly stitch your heart back together without asking permission.

I’ve spent so much of my life believing happiness would arrive wearing fireworks.

A promotion.

A big milestone.

A dream opportunity.

Millions of readers.

The perfect house.

The perfect version of me.

But lately…

Happiness keeps showing up disguised as incredibly ordinary Tuesdays.

A tree.

A breeze.

Golden light through leaves.

A bee minding its own business while I dramatically questioned my entire existence.

So yes.

I’ve been talking to trees.

And no.

I don’t think I’ve lost my mind.

If anything…

I think I’ve finally been quiet enough to hear it.

Not with words.

Just with that strange feeling that maybe life isn’t hiding somewhere in the future after all.

Maybe it’s been standing outside this entire time.

Waiting.

Patiently.

Like a tree.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately, try this.

Find a tree.

Say hello.

Tell it about your day.

Thank it for the shade.

Stand there for five minutes without reaching for your phone.

Worst case?

You spend time outside.

Best case?

You accidentally remember what being alive feels like.

And honestly…

That’s a pretty incredible return on investment.

I’ll be back around here more often.

Not because I finally figured life out.

But because these tiny moments—the funny, gentle, ordinary ones—are starting to feel too precious not to write down.

If they can remind me how beautiful the world is…

Maybe they’ll remind you too.
